Long before the language of engineering existed, weavers across West Africa were running geometric protocols on hand-built looms — encoding family, region, status, and meaning into thread. Kente, mudcloth, adire, kuba — every pattern a system. Every garment a transmission. The cloth wasn't decoration. It was infrastructure.
When the camera arrived, the studios filled with people wearing their best. Sidibé's Bamako. Keïta's Mali. Ojeikere's Nigeria. The portraits weren't candid — they were composed, deliberate, dignified. People dressed not to be seen, but to be remembered. The garment held the room. The pose held the lineage.
