Color Lore

Every color has a name.

We don't sell “purple” or “navy.” Every SunBorn colorway is named, and every name carries a meaning. Most come from Igbo, one of West Africa's great languages; one comes from Yoruba. Here is what each one means and where you'll find it.

Two colors share one pink: Eze and Adaeze, the king and the king's daughter.

Oji Black #111111

Oji Black

Igbo — oji, black

Ugo Purple #522760

Ugo Purple

Igbo — ugo, eagle; also an old word for purple

Ugo is the eagle, and its feather is worn by titled elders as the mark of honor. In some Igbo speech, ugo is also the word for purple itself. Purple was the hardest colour in the ancient world to make and the most restricted to wear. It was the pigment of rulers by law, not by taste. We put it on training wear. Ugo Purple is the ground code of the Sankofa Kinetic Engine.
